Training - Why is it Important?
Many companies are feeling the effects of the downturn in the economy, and IT professionals aren't immune.  Teams have been downsized, resources are harder to come by, and many people are performing the work of two or more employees.  For these reasons, personnel are busier than ever, and the mundane, daily tasks are the center of their focus.  Professionals get into the mindset that they don't have time to update or improve their current skills or learn a new set of marketable skills.

Not taking the time to do this can be career damaging and may be holding IT personnel back professionally.  Changes in technology and the IT industry move at lightening quick speed, so staff  must keep up to date with new trends and developments as they emerge, if they hope to remain at the top of their field.

Improving and expanding your skills continuously can help with job security - not only in the job market, but also with your current employer.  Companies, including your own, want employees with the sharpest skills to make the company look good and remain profitable.

To get the training you want, you should be proactive in the following ways.
  • Determine in which areas you need to strengthen your skills. Remember that the training you seek should align with your current job or future career goals.
  • Approach your current supervisor and explain how your training can benefit the company.  You could offer to share what you have learned with others in the company.
  • Stay on track.  Once you enroll in a training program, stick with it and stay focused. If you have enrolled in a certification program, complete the required steps to earn it. If you started taking classes on a specific curriculum path, attend them all. Once training is completed, try to find opportunities to use your new skills and further develop them.
